Wedding planning comes with approximately 7,842 questions.
Some are easy.
- “What dates are you available?”
- “What does your package include?”
- “How many people can your venue accommodate?”
And then there are the questions you hesitate to ask because you think:
Wait…am I supposed to already know this?
Nope.
You’re not.
You’ve probably never planned a wedding before. That’s kind of the point.
So let’s talk about some of the questions couples sometimes feel awkward asking their wedding vendors.
“Do we have to feed you?”
Yep. Ask.
And don’t feel weird about it.
Vendor meals are common, but exactly what’s expected can vary depending on the vendor and their contract.
Your photographer, DJ, planner, videographer and other vendors may be working for many hours on your wedding day.
Don’t assume.
Ask what they require, when they eat and whether meals are included in their package.
A quick conversation now can prevent an awkward situation on your wedding day.
“How much should we tip you?”
Another totally reasonable question.
There isn’t one universal answer for every wedding vendor, and tipping expectations can vary.
Some vendors own their businesses. Some work for larger companies. Some include gratuity in their pricing or contract.
Ask.
Your vendors have heard this question before, and they’d much rather explain their policies than have you stress about it at midnight the week before your wedding.
“What happens if it rains?”
If you’re planning an outdoor ceremony, please ask this.
Even if your wedding is scheduled for the most beautiful Saturday in October.
Even if the weather forecast says sunshine.
Even if your fiancé says, “It’ll be fine.”
Ask.
Where does the ceremony move? Who makes the call? When is the decision made? Is there an additional cost? What happens to the chairs? What happens to your outdoor photos?
A rain plan isn’t pessimism.
It’s good planning.
“What happens if you get sick?”
This is another one people sometimes feel awkward asking.
But you aren’t being rude.
You’re protecting your wedding.
Ask vendors what their backup plan looks like in an emergency. Do they have a network of professionals they can call? Is there a replacement policy in the contract?
You don’t need to assume something will go wrong. You just want to know what happens if something does.
“Can we change our minds?”
Sometimes!
But there may be deadlines, fees or limitations.
Maybe you originally chose blush flowers and now you’re obsessed with blue.
Maybe you want to add an extra hour of reception time.
Maybe your guest count changed.
Ask your vendor what can be changed, when changes need to be finalized and whether there are additional costs.
Your wedding is going to evolve as you plan. That’s normal.
“What exactly does ‘full service’ mean?”
This phrase can mean different things to different people.
- Does setup include everything?
- Does someone move your ceremony chairs?
- Does the florist place the centerpieces?
- Does the coordinator stay through the entire reception?
- Does “full service” include teardown?
Never assume.
If you aren’t sure what a package includes, ask the vendor to walk you through it.
That’s not being difficult.
That’s being an informed client.
“What happens if we’re running late?”
Honestly?
You probably will be.
Not necessarily dramatically late. But weddings involve people, and people are not known for following timelines with military precision. 😂
Ask your vendors how they handle delays.
Does your photographer have flexibility? What happens if hair and makeup run over? Can your DJ adjust the timeline? Does the venue have a hard end time?
Knowing your options ahead of time can make a small delay feel much less stressful.
“Do we really need this?”
This might be one of the most important questions you can ask.
A good vendor should be able to explain why something is recommended.
Maybe you really do need it.
Maybe it’s something that will make your wedding day significantly easier.
Or maybe it’s simply an optional upgrade that isn’t necessary for the type of wedding you’re planning.
Ask.
Your wedding vendors aren’t there to pressure you into spending money on things you don’t want.
They’re there to help you create the wedding you’re envisioning.
“Can you explain that contract to me?”
YES.
Please.
If you don’t understand something in your contract, ask.
Don’t sign something because you’re embarrassed that you don’t understand it.
Ask what happens if you cancel. Ask about payment schedules. Ask about overtime. Ask about rescheduling. Ask about meals. Ask about setup. Ask about what’s included.
A good vendor won’t be offended by reasonable questions.
They’ll appreciate that you care about understanding the agreement.
And one last question you should absolutely ask…
“What do you wish couples knew before their wedding day?”
This is one of my favorite questions because wedding professionals have seen a lot of weddings.
They’ve seen the things that go beautifully.
They’ve seen the things that go sideways.
They’ve seen couples stress over tiny details that nobody noticed—and they’ve seen the little things that made a huge difference.
So ask them.
You might get a surprisingly helpful answer.
And if you’re still collecting questions, bring them with you to an upcoming Elegant Wedding Expo. One of the best parts of attending a wedding expo is getting to talk directly with the professionals who will potentially be part of your day.
Ask the “dumb” question.
Ask the awkward question.
Ask the question you Googled three times but still don’t understand.
There are no stupid wedding-planning questions.
You’re planning a wedding, not taking a test you were supposed to study for.
