You walked into a wedding expo with a million questions.
You walked out with brochures, business cards, inspiration, giveaways…and possibly even more questions than you started with. 😂
Totally normal.
A wedding expo is a great first step for finding your Central Illinois wedding vendors, but what you do after the expo is just as important.
If you recently attended a wedding expo (or you’re preparing for the next one) here are seven things you should do once you get home.
1. Sort your favorites while they’re still fresh
Don’t wait three weeks to go through everything you collected.
While the expo is still fresh in your mind, separate vendors into a few simple categories:
LOVE IT: Vendors you definitely want to talk to.
MAYBE: Vendors you’re interested in but need more information from.
NOPE: Vendors you know aren’t the right fit.
You don’t need to make every decision at the expo. The goal is to narrow down your options so you know where to focus next.
2. Follow the vendors you loved
Head to Instagram and Facebook and take a look at the vendors you connected with.
This can tell you a lot.
For photographers and videographers, look through full galleries.. not just one favorite Instagram post. For florists, look at different wedding styles. For DJs, see what kind of events they typically work. For planners, pay attention to the types of weddings they coordinate.
You aren’t just looking at pretty pictures.
You’re trying to figure out: Do I like their work, their personality, and their overall approach?
3. Reach out and start the conversation
This is the big one.
If you met a vendor at the expo and loved them, don’t be afraid to reach out.
Send the email. Fill out the contact form. Send the message.
Tell them you met them at the expo, share your wedding date, venue (if you have one), and what you’re looking for.
Even if you aren’t ready to book immediately, starting the conversation gives you the opportunity to ask questions and find out whether you’re a good fit.
4. Ask for the information you didn’t get at the expo
Maybe you loved a photographer but weren’t sure about their packages.
Maybe you found a DJ you liked but didn’t know what was included.
Maybe you discovered a florist who creates exactly what you’ve been saving on Pinterest.
Now is the time to ask.
Some of the best questions to ask wedding vendors include:
- Are you available on our wedding date?
- What are your packages and pricing?
- What’s included?
- Are there additional fees?
- How far in advance do you recommend booking?
- What happens after we book?
- Do you require a deposit or retainer?
- Can we see more examples of your work?
The answers will make comparing your options much easier.
5. Don’t just compare prices.. compare the experience
Budget is obviously important when you’re planning a wedding.
But the cheapest option isn’t always the best value.
Think about what matters most to you.
Do you want a photographer who makes you feel completely comfortable? A DJ who keeps your dance floor packed? A planner who handles the details so you don’t have to? A florist who can bring a very specific vision to life?
Your wedding vendors have a huge impact on how your wedding day feels.
So when you’re comparing options, ask yourself:
Who do I trust? Who understands what I want? Who do I genuinely enjoy talking to?
Those answers matter.
6. Remember that popular vendors can book quickly
This is especially important if you’re planning a Saturday wedding during a popular time of year.
You might meet three photographers you love at an expo and think, I’ll get back to them next month.
But they may not have your date next month.
If you’ve found a vendor who feels like the right fit, don’t wait simply because you think you have unlimited time.
Have the conversation. Find out their availability. Review the contract. And if everything looks good, book your vendor.
7. Keep planning, but don’t forget to enjoy it
Wedding planning can become a second job if you let it.
There will always be another decision to make, another Pinterest board to create, and another vendor to email.
Take it one step at a time.
You don’t need to plan your entire wedding in one weekend.
Start with the vendors and decisions that matter most to you, celebrate the things you’ve already checked off your list, and remember why you’re doing all of this in the first place.
Your wedding expo experience doesn’t end when you walk out the door.
It’s really just the beginning.
The goal isn’t to collect the most business cards or visit every booth.
It’s to find the Central Illinois wedding vendors who feel right for you, start the conversations, and build a team you can trust with your wedding day.
So go through those business cards.
Send the emails.
Make the calls.
And if you found someone you loved at the expo, don’t wait too long to reach out.
Your dream vendor team could be one conversation away.
