If you’re thinking about getting married in 2027, fall is a really good time to start turning that “someday” wedding into an actual plan.
Maybe you’re newly engaged. Maybe you’ve been engaged for six months and have spent most of that time saying, “We really need to start planning.” (No judgment. 😂) Or maybe you’re just starting to realize that the wedding you’re imagining is going to require a few more decisions than picking a pretty date.
The good news? You do not need to have everything figured out this fall.
But there are a few things worth getting on your radar now—especially if you’re planning a wedding in Central Illinois.
Start with the big three: budget, guest count and date
Before you start falling in love with every venue, photographer and floral arrangement you see on Instagram, take a little time to talk about the three things that will shape almost every other wedding decision:
How much do we want to spend?
How many people are we inviting?
When do we want to get married?
And no, these don’t have to be exact.
You don’t need to know that you’re inviting exactly 147 people or that your floral budget is precisely $3,284.
A general idea is enough to get started.
Your guest count matters because a wedding for 75 people is a very different event than a wedding for 250. Your date matters because some dates and seasons are more in demand than others. And your budget helps you figure out where you want to splurge, where you’d rather save, and what simply isn’t important to you.
The goal isn’t to create a perfect spreadsheet on day one. It’s to make sure you’re both generally headed in the same direction.
Start looking at venues earlier than you think
Here’s where 2027 suddenly starts feeling very real.
If you’ve got your heart set on a particular Central Illinois venue (or you’re looking for a popular Saturday during peak wedding season) it’s worth starting your venue search this fall.
And don’t just look at the photos.
When you tour a venue, pay attention to the things that aren’t immediately obvious in the Instagram pictures.
Where will everyone park? Is there a rain plan? Where will you get ready? What’s included? Are there catering restrictions? What does the bar situation look like? How late can your reception go? Are there additional fees?
And, perhaps most importantly: Can you actually picture yourselves getting married there?
Pretty is important. But pretty and practical is even better.
Start building your vendor wish list
Once you have a venue (or even while you’re searching) start thinking about the vendors who will help bring the day together.
Photographer. Videographer. DJ or band. Florist. Planner or coordinator. Hair and makeup. Cake or desserts. Transportation. Rentals.
You don’t necessarily need to book all of them this fall.
But you should start learning who is out there.
This is one of the reasons wedding expos can be so helpful. Instead of spending weeks opening a million browser tabs and trying to figure out which vendors are actually a good fit, you can meet wedding professionals face-to-face, ask questions, see their work and get a feel for their personalities.
Because here’s something couples sometimes don’t realize until they’re deep into planning:
You are not just hiring a service. You’re inviting people into one of the biggest days of your life.
You want people you trust.
Figure out what actually matters to you
This is the fun part.
Start talking about your wedding as a couple, not just as a collection of Pinterest boards.
What do you want your guests to remember?
Do you want an incredible dance floor? A beautiful dinner? Gorgeous photos? A relaxed outdoor celebration? A packed dance floor? A really personal ceremony? An elaborate reception? Something small and intimate?
There is no right answer.
And you don’t have to recreate someone else’s wedding.
Your friend’s wedding can be beautiful. Your cousin’s wedding can be beautiful. The wedding you saved on Pinterest can be beautiful.
But yours should feel like you.
Knowing what matters most will make future decisions so much easier—and will help you spend your money where it actually makes a difference to you.
Don’t try to plan the entire wedding this fall
This might be the most important advice of all.
– You do not need to spend October choosing napkin colors.
– You do not need to have your invitations designed.
– You do not need to know exactly what your centerpieces will look like.
– You certainly don’t need to have every single vendor booked before Thanksgiving.
Right now, focus on the foundation.
Set your general budget. Get a rough guest count. Decide what season you’re considering. Tour venues. Meet some vendors. Start figuring out what you actually want.
Then let the rest come together.
Wedding planning is a lot less overwhelming when you stop looking at it as one giant project and start looking at it as a bunch of small decisions that happen over time.
And if you feel overwhelmed already? You’re normal.
There’s a weird thing that happens after the excitement of getting engaged wears off.
At first, everyone is saying, “OMG! You’re engaged!”
Then suddenly someone asks, “So…have you picked a venue?”
And you think:
We literally just got engaged. Please calm down.
😂
Take a breath. You have time.
Start with the big decisions, learn about your options, meet local wedding professionals and give yourselves permission to enjoy this part of the process.
And if you’re looking for an easy way to meet Central Illinois wedding vendors all in one place, come see us at an upcoming Elegant Wedding Expo. Bring your questions, bring your Pinterest board, bring your fiancé.. and maybe bring a notebook.
You don’t have to leave with every decision made.
You just might leave with a much better idea of where to start.
Because attending is just the beginning.
